Top 10 Places to Visit

I did not really know what to anticipate, when I visited Suriname at July of 2019. Beyond that, in-depth info regarding the nation was fairly scarce, although I’d researched lots of places to visit in Suriname. Nevertheless, as soon as I came, I found an irresistible nation filled with hidden gems diversity, tropical paradises wonders, and friendly, hospitable folks.

Take a Look at my Surinamese Chinese & Indonesian Breakfast Markets Tour | Paramaribo, Suriname

I spent most of my 11 days in Suriname traveling with Jenny Tours, who showed me how. In the economies of Paramaribo into the isolated jungles in Palumeu, I was blown away by what Suriname had to offer. This nation is a melting pot of cultures, which gives much of the food flavors that are familiar that you’d expect to find a world away. And then, at other times, the food is a mix of several cultures, leading to a dish that is unique to this portion of the world.

The cities were unbelievable, but it was the areas inside the Surinamese rain forest, far from cell phone towers and paved streets, where I fell in love for this nation. Those places forced me to kick back, unwind, and do nothing, although I am an admitted workaholic. It was paradise for me and I am positive it’ll be for you. These are the top 10 places.

It is pretty easy to comprehend Paramaribo is among the top places to go to in Suriname. This cosmopolitan city is the capital and largest city, a cultural melting pot of Suriname unlike any other, and also a destination. It’s also a food-lover’s heaven, with culinary influences from all over the world. It’s also a hub city that is fantastic, as adventures during Suriname will start and finish there.

The amount of diversity in Paramaribo can not be overstated. From the minute I landed, I noticed people from many distinct backgrounds working together and assisting each other in everything appeared to be perfect balance and met. This combination can be tasted in Paramaribo’s food, much of which is a special fusion cuisine of at least two cultures. It helps solidify Paramaribo among the best places to visit in Suriname.

Paramaribo diversity stems from its colonial past, when English and Dutch settlers came and brought African Americans into South America’s shore. Some slaves escaped into the inside of the nation and mixed with the native Amerindian population. The Dutch brought from China, Indonesia, and India over indentured servants, when slavery was outlawed two decades afterwards. The communities flourished, have developed, and co-existed with yet another ever since.

Indonesian Street Food at Lelydorp

In my view, the perfect way to do this mix would be by using your taste buds. Kwatta Sunday Market sells an outstanding chicken that has Chinese, Indian, and African tastes. It is possible to follow that with an Indonesian sticky-rice-and-coconut dessert called a cornbread called bojo, an jalebi, or even ketan serundeng!

Additionally you should not miss the Marketplace on Sundays, where you can purchase chicken shumai pork buns, and a sausage that is chorizo-like with a Chinese sauce on it. Banana in the Indonesian Saoenah Markt, lumpia, and the liver satay are also winners! And where I ate courses, take a look at the buffet in Jakarta Restaurant, if you’ve got a hankering for some Javanese food I thought I would need to be wrapped out of there!

Even the marketplace in the city is varied. The poultry and meat section was like markets I’d visited in Africa, while there was a Asian impact in the vegetable market.

Isadou Island

Caiman Hunting at Night

One of my favourite spots in town is a soup cafe that sells a Javanese saoto soup with lots of sprouts, Souposo along with a creamy and rich peanut-based African soup called Crunchy Pinda. This restaurant alone is among the very best places to go to in Suriname! The very first eatery I visited in town, Cafetaria p Smaak, offered a superb breakfast that appeared to be both Dutch- along with Indian-inspired.

In addition, I need to add Martin’s House of Roopram Restaurant and Indian Food, each of which provide Indian attractions yummy, they immediately transported me back into the Subcontinent. And if you’re in the mood for Chinese food, then check Wok about Fire out. They serve a tropical twist to a spicy chicken chow mein.

Rounding out the reasons why Paramaribo is one of the top places to visit in Suriname is its own lodging. If you’re on a tight budget, then you can always check in Oasis at the heart of the city or even the Guesthouse Kiwi.

To get a more luxurious stay, try the Royal Torarica Hotel, which is like a posh boutique hotel with upscale, modern furnishings and decor. Regardless of your budget, there’s a place for you to stay in Paramaribo, which is another reason why it’s among the top places to go to in Suriname!

Stone Island

Talking of Javanese culture and cuisine, I highly suggest taking some time to learn more about the areas just outside of Paramaribo. One of my favorites is Lelydorp, the country ‘s center’s village. This village is situated on the main road heading south from Paramaribo. Although the village’s population is of Javanese descent, there are also significant East Indian, Creole, European, and Jewish inhabitants as well.

Howler Monkey Island along with Jungle Treks

One of the best things to do in Lelydorp would be to check the regional crafts landscape out. The pottery marketplace, which can be reached with a bumpy, well-worn road, is conducted by a potter who utilizes tree bark powder and clay to make vases black vases, figurines, and much more. Right next door is a shop selling high-quality wood products. The workers there tirelessly produce stunning works including design ships, cups, paddles, plates, and even animal figurines. Some of my favorites were a stool in the form of a caiman and also a seat made to look like a jaguar!

The village is the perfect place to locate food that is outstanding , if the crafts weren’t sufficient to convince you that Lelydorp is among the best places to go to in Suriname. I was taken by my guide Jan from Jenny Tours in the city into a few food stalls. The odor there had tummy growling and my mouth watering !

Getting up Browns-Mountain

There’s a wide array of foods available from the six sellers, including kidneys, chicken toes, fried banana, yuca, saoto soup, noodles, chicken, satay, and more. I suggest the chicken satay, which includes bathed in soy sauce and peanut butter. The tender chicken along with sweet carrot and the salty soy dressing was out of the world!

Waterfall Hikes

You should also go for the lumpia, which is that is stuffed such as sprouts. There has been also a remarkably yummy boiled vegetable dish comprising spinach and much more sprouts. It was not sexy to me at all, although it was topped with everything was likely to be a spicy peanut sauce. The reason Lelydorp is just one of the top places to visit in Suriname is and tender. It was yummy to place down, even though I felt as though I was about to burst from food that is a lot of!

Riverside Lunch

Located across a peninsula just northeast of the capital of Paramaribo is the hotel of Johanna-Margaretha. This municipality in the Commewijne District along the perfect bank about the Suriname River is currently bursting with daring activities for travellers.

Isadou Resort

Johanna-Margaretha lies near the confluence of Their Commewijne and Suriname Rivers.

It is here that animal lovers can see pods of Guiana dolphins swimming and swimming through the atmosphere. These dolphins are among the species of dolphin in the world and are noted for their pink bellies. A number of them are completely pink! I had the joy of watching the dolphins set on a long time as we approached sunset and jump from the lake waters.

Jaw Jaw Village

In the event that you suffer from seasickness, then I suggest visiting at high tide instead of low tide. I was told by my direct from Jenny Tours, which the confluence’s waters are lots rougher at the time.  The confluence is one of the top places to go to in Suriname!

Continue on down the Commewijne River after you’ve seen the dolphins. You turn down a side canal that strongly reminded me of photographs I’d seen of this Kerala backwaters region in India, if you book with Jenny Tours. It is interesting because down the canal would be the Johanna en Margaretha plantation that has been my very first thought. An Indian family, who’ll serve you a spectacular dinner currently owns the plantation!

Go Fishing at the Rapids

As they dip into this tasty meal travelers who adore Indian food will probably be in paradise. The dinner consists of chicken curry, aloo together with greens, and a roti. The chicken curry is covered in a yummy masalathat tasted great crepe-like roti, with all the airy. Try the aloo!

Palumeu Jungle Expeditions

Top 10 Places to Visit

After your meal, you are going to have the opportunity to leave the plantation and head deep into the mangrove swamp that is nearby after dark to look for caimans. This excursion is another reason why the region is just one of the best places. During our excursion, Roël would watch carefully for eyes reflecting in the light from our spotlight. Then, in a flash, then he’d grab caimans right out of the water! I got to hold one of them!

Palumeu Village

NOTE: The trip into the swamp to search for caimans has been a highlight of the time in Suriname. But you will be eaten alive by the mosquitoes that are resident if you don’t cover your body. I personally recommend OFF! Wonders for me early in my trip before I rushed out. It did not work also, although a brand attempted after that!

As I traveled from the capital city of Paramaribo into the riverside city of Albina, my guide Imro and that I stopped in the little city of Tamanredjo. It was among the simpler cities as the streets leading to it had been well-paved, to achieve in the nation. The population of tamanredjo is roughly 95% Javanese, so if I was there, I expected to discover some yummy foods from Java. I found precisely what I was looking for in an eatery.

Top 10 Places to Visit

The menu within offered at least 20 menu items, which means you will have your pick of tons of dishes! I reminded me and started my meal with some pommesitair juice , which very refreshing. Then, I slid into a spicy chili sauce, two types of rice, beans, sprouts, peanut dressing, a few noodles, fried banana, and chicken.

Oily noodles and the peppery were somewhat thick and were thicker than al dente. I also enjoyed the fresh green beans along with the fresh sprouts. Specifically, the greens with the peanut dressing was incredible. Peanut sauces and dressings take any dish along with noodles on my plate, bananas, along with the chicken have been no exception.

The star of this meal was the fried chicken. I could tell it hadn’t been frozen and that it was pure, natural chicken. As soon as you’ve had chicken that is fresh, you are never going to look at frozen poultry exactly the identical way. The freshness made it juicier, more tender, along with a crispier skin. You can not beat on that, particularly with the peanut sauce. This sweet meal which makes Tamanredjo just one of the top places to go to in Suriname. Trust me, it is that great!

The tiny village of Galibi in the extreme northeastern corner of Suriname is among the country’s regions. The shore stretchs down, so Galibi looks, as you make your way from boat out of Albina.

It is along these shores that species of sea turtle lay their eggs between the weeks of February and May. This is the reason why Galibi is to visit in Suriname. Witnessing a mom turtle dig a hole in the sand and put her eggs has become a popular pastime for visitors to the part of Suriname. Equally thrilling is the sight of observing baby turtles hatch and scurry at the shadow of night across the sand toward the water. Make certain to use a lighting to see these remarkable animals at night, if you go. The animals can be disturbed by Employing a bright, white light.

Unfortunately I visited Galibi nearly two months, at July after season normally ends. But even though I was not able to see some sea turtles, I still got to do the next best thing, which could learn about them. Close to the ocean, on the northern side of the town is a hut that has a display showing all the various types of turtles who nest on Galibi’s shores. There are even life-size sculptures of the species in the sand. I was surprised by how enormous the leatherback turtle would be!

I also recommend meeting with the locals while in Galibi. I reserved my own Galibi trip with Jenny Tours. My guide for this part of my trip, Imro, was so he introduced me to a locals, who invited me to enjoy a seafood feast together! The feast consisted of a fresh crab, curry crab, along with wild boar stew. The seafood was succulent and tasty, and the boar had a gaminess to it!

Top 10 Places to Visit

Last, but certainly not least, have a tour of this village. It is fairly small, but it is a excellent way to spend. From the beautiful shores where you can select mangoes right off the trees into the downtown area, Galibi is serene and peaceful.

Top 10 Places to Visit

Visiting the Sint Antonius primary school is a good approach to get a look into what being a kid in Galibi is like. The children are quite shy, so try not to shove a camera in their faces. The children attend school in Galibi until the eighth grade, and then they must travel the river down to go to the high school there.

Top 10 Places to Visit

Before you leave, be certain you try some catfish, which can be very yummy and can be a specialty that is local! Between the food, the Amazing hospitality, along with the tranquil environment, it is no wonder Galibi is to Go to in Suriname

Another of the places is also a gigantic, your Brokopondo Reservoir lake close to the city of Brownsweg. This lake came into being in the 1960s, even when the Afobaka Dam was built across the Suriname River. Water from the lake flooded a valley, leaving only the tops of these trees poking out of the water. Their ghostly forms still rise from the dark waters, although the trees are long-dead today.

Located to the Stone Island peninsula sticking out into the lake is the Stone Island Lodge.

While being only feet from the lakeshore there, you will enjoy accommodations. Using Stone Island as a home base, you’ll also be only minutes away from trips.

Howler Monkey Island is as it is home to a colony of howler monkeys. Since I did not get to watch them they are sometimes elusive , but there is a poultry farm in the island at which you could take a look at a enormous yellow-foot tortoise. The treks into the jungle completely devoid of wildlife or can also be teeming together. It is all luck of the draw on. Just go in with low expectations and enjoy the adventure!

Top 10 Places to Visit

The Brokopondo Reservoir is a excellent spot to swim, despite the gruesome piranha’s existence. Unless you’ve got open cuts in your body you don’t actually need to be worried about those fish. As it popular to grab them and nourish them up but the fish might need to worry! Fried piranha is bony, so be cautious if you attempt to consume it. However, the meat the cheeks, is melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I suggest pulling the meat between the ribs out, eating the meat round the brain, and digging out the cheeks.

The Brokopondo Reservoir along with Stone Island place isn’t hard to miss, but it is packed with gems and wonderful experiences. These actions make it among the best places to go to in Suriname!

Not far from the Brokopondo Reservoir is the Brownsberg Nature Park.

This green stretch of jungle is home to your peak called Browns-Mountain. Atop the peak is a campground, but it’ll take some time for you to get up there.

The trek up Browns-Mountain is going to be tough, to say the least, if you don’t take a vehicle with at least four-wheel drive. The streets are filled with enormous cracks and potholes and are not paved. The streets also become muddy so it is easy for vehicles that are lesser to get stuck. The trip is worth it, however, as the campsite in the summit offers views of the nearby jungle and the Brokopondo Reservoir that is remote.

Top 10 Places to Visit

One of the best things would be to take two drops: one to each of the waterfalls that dash down the sides of the mountain. Both hikes are laborious and long, and one foot in the steeper parts of the hike could result in an injury. I suggest paying eye on these paths, which can be uneven and slippery and wearing hiking boots. There are ropes strung between the trees throughout each hike’s sections, which means you’ll have some assistance.

Top 10 Places to Visit

You will be sexy if you’re anything like me and pouring sweat by the time you reach both drops. They are gorgeous, however, and are totally worth of the work required to achieve them. They’re true gems that are hidden, so be sure to bask in their glory for some time before you return into the campsite. Should you desire, take a dip in the water. Just remember to reapply mosquito repellent. The mosquitoes on Browns-Mountain are no joke!

If you’re trying to visit Isadou Island from the Brownsweg area, you have to pass a city about the Suriname River, through Atjoni. This port that is riversite is very important to this area of Suriname, as you can catch ships from there. Atjoni is not only a place to pass through. It is also among the best places to go to in Suriname due to its incredible food!

Top 10 Places to Visit

Very close to the Suriname River is a wonderful restaurant that serves delicious regional cuisine such as fried sausage, banana, along with also an Indonesian-inspired chicken. The noodles come bathed. However, my favourite thing was the chicken. It had and was fresh. The marinade added into its deliciousness. The chicken was the clear star of this meal, although the chicken came with a side of french fries with lettuce, which was nice. Love it with a light and refreshing Parbo bier!

Atjoni is the spot to stock up on whatever you might want as you’re on Isadou Island. Head over to this Fu Lin supermarket to buy some beers to carry with you, as the hotel to the island will not provide their own beer.  Get some for your boat captain as well!

I really like the job that I get to perform. Non-stop blogging, filming, and editing videos is is the life I have led for over a decade. I stay connected to my apparatus pretty much all day long to do this. But when I visited the remote Isadou Island at the middle of the Upper Suriname River, I had to let All that go. I couldn’t check my work emails. I couldn’t post my latest blog articles or videos on Instagram or even YouTube. Why? Since there was no WiFi. I had to place my cellphone and laptop away and just enjoy nature. And it was.

I stayed on the island, this Isadou Resort’s rustic bungalows at the accommodation. The bungalows are minimum in their own style and include a little bathroom directly inside the entry. Futher interior is a room with two beds that have mosquito netting them on. Beyond that is the rear”porch,” which has a hammock at which you can look out in the Suriname River. It is the very best location in Suriname unwind, clear your head, and to unwind.

And relax, I really did. However, as a travel addict, I also had to do some adventuring. Across the river to select a trek through town, you can have a boat ride from Isadou Island. There, you might be able to spot a number of these indigenous wildlife, which includes sloths, tortoises, and monkeys. Is a village that is home into a Surinamese Maroon tribe called the Saamaca, Jaw Jaw. This village is just one of my personal favorite places to go to in Suriname.

The Saamaca are the descendants of escaped slaves who blended with the Amerindian folks. Visiting the village is an excellent peek into their everyday life. Married men and women each sleep in their own houses that are separate, although their wooden homes have power. When I visited, I got to meet several locals, like a woman producing a shop owner who owned a beautiful turtle shell casaba soup, and a woman who sold me a hand-stitched scarf. The highlight of my visit was purchasing a gorgeous, carved paddle by a man in the city, which I now hang on my walls at home.

Some of Jaw Jaw village’s 500-or-so residents Operate in the Isadou Resort.

There, they cook dishes that had my mouth watering all the time. From the chicken bursting into the yuca-rich casaba soup with tastes that are Indonesian, mealtime was always a yummy experience.

You’ll have a lot of downtime, When you return to the island after an experience. One of the coolest experiences you can have on Isadou Island would be to have a dip. These regions consist of fast-moving water that rushes between river stones. If you’re cautious, you can anchor yourself like a massage and allow the water pound your back between those rocks. It is so relaxing and can be an excellent way to cool off!

Even further into the inside of Suriname is the entry on my list of places. This place, called Palumeu, is remote, it could be retrieved in one of two ways. You can either take a 12-day boat ride from the Zorg en Hoop Airport of Paramaribo from a charter airplane flight or Albina.

A plethora of experiences await you, As soon as you’re on the floor at Palumeu. I suggest touring this region with Mets Travel and Tours, who go above and beyond to create your Palumeu adventure smooth, enlightening, and a whole lot of fun. Julius, my guide, took me to a trip through the rapids around the Tapanahony River, where locals fish for piranha! And while we did not catch some, I’ll overlook the remarkable views of the water rushing over and between the two stones at the lake. It was absolutely stunning!

You can also enjoy treks into the jungle in Palumeu, which will help solidify it among the top 10 places to visit in Suriname. Whether you choose to trek through the secondary and primary forests or decide to hike to the top of Poti Hill, then you can not lose. I enjoy becoming one with nature and trekking through jungles. Excursions through the volcano are worth it to me personally, if I really don’t see a single animal.

Another expertise in Palumeu is visiting the true village. I visited in the middle of the day, so the majority of the locals were off, working. However, I had a wonderful adventure as I toured this region. I got to see the locals’ houses, which are built on stilts in the event of flooding, along with a tiny, wooden Baptist church.

One of my favourite experiences in the city tried a number of the local beer. It is a thick beverage that I drank directly out of a bowl. It’s pretty yummy and was so refreshing I ordered a second one! You shouldn’t leave town without purchasing some crafts from the locals. They create an assortment of goods, including necklaces, bracelets, blades, musical instruments, and arrows. The jewellery is made from leaves and seeds!

Top 10 Places to Visit

If you want to experience pure, almost untouched character, Palumeu is where you want to go. It is among my favourite places. I enjoyed myself so much that take my family so they could fall in love with this the identical way I did and I can not wait to return!

Top 10 Places to Visit

Changed me. Traveling does this. But it’s rare that a destination catches hold of me. Suriname did this to me, and that I can not wait to see what sort of adventures I’ll have in my next go-around. To experience all of the Suriname has to offer a visit now to Paramaribo. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
